William Butterfield (1814-1900). One
of the most strident of all 19th century church
architects; his All Saints, Margaret Street, in London is
seen as the touchstone of the 19th century Anglo-Catholic movement,
and a model for Anglo-Catholic churches all over the
world. He made great use of colour, using contrasting
bricks in walls, and contrasting tiles on floors. His
churches are full of carvings. His work in Suffolk is, however, relatively insignificant. His restorations can be found at Bacton, Ellough, Lawshall, Ringsfield and two of the Sudbury churches, St Peter and St Gregory. His best work in the county is probably the rebuilding of Ipswich St Mary at Stoke, carried out with his customary self-confidence. |
