Hatchment. Large wooden lozenge shape, with a coat of arms on it. It was carried in front of a local worthy's funeral procession, displayed on the house of the dead person, and then hung permanently in the parish church. They were mainly in use in the late 17th and 18th centuries. Victorian restorers often threw them out, but Thornham Magna has seven and Redgrave has thirteen.
