Monstrance. A sun-shaped device for displaying the blessed sacrament for reverence, most typically for the service called Benediction. Benediction was abolished by the Anglicans at the Reformation, surviving in the Catholic church; but it was reintroduced into the Church of England in the late 19th century under the influence of the Oxford Movement. Pretty much a fad, it was still commonly found in Anglo-catholic parishes as late as the 1980s, but has now virtually disappeared. It is also less commonly found in Catholic churches, since the reforms of the second Vatican council.

No medieval monstrances survive in Suffolk.
