Spandrels. When an arch has been squared off, or the inside of a right-angle joined by an inward curve, the space inside is called a spandrel. For instance, the area above a doorway into a porch, or within the hammer on a hammerbeam roof. They are often decorated with mythical beasts and symbols. Fine carved spandrels above the main entrance can be seen at Cratfield, Peasenhall and Yaxley. |
