Arcade. The line of pillars down the side of a nave, sometimes extending into the chancel. The aisles extend beyond the arcade. Many fine examples exist in Suffolk; the biggest are at Bury St Mary, and some of the grandest include Lavenham, Long Melford and Stoke-by-Nayland. It is possible for a nave to have an arcade on only one side, most famously at Kersey. |
