Gesso. A method of sculpting details, whereby plaster of paris is applied to another material, usually wood, and then carved and painted when dry. Originally a trick used by amateur carpenters, some gessowork is superb, especially on the retable at Thornham Parva and the roodscreen at Southwold. The stone font at Westhall also has painted gessowork on it.
